If you’re dreaming of soft ocean breezes, golden sunsets, and toes in the sand for your engagement photos, San Diego beaches are the perfect backdrop. As local photographers, we love capturing the mix of romance, adventure, and laid-back California charm that the coastline offers. Locations that offer views as epic as San Diego beaches are far and few between. We especially recommend considering the beach for your engagement photos if most of your wedding guests will be traveling in from out of town. It gets them so excited to visit San Diego for your wedding.

Recently, we had the joy of photographing Jenna and Kevin’s engagement session at Del Mar Dog Beach. With its rugged cliffs, overlooking bluffs, and panoramic ocean views, it’s one of our favorite spots for San Diego engagement photography. It’s also a relatively quiet beach making it the perfect location to melt into the moments and let everything else fade away.

Why Choose a Beach Engagement Session in San Diego?

San Diego offers over 70 miles of coastline, each stretch with its own personality. Some of our favorite beaches for engagement photos include:

  • Ocean Beach – dramatic rock formations and golden hour magic.
  • Del Mar Dog Beach – quiet and secluded with wildflowers up top and sandy beaches down below, this location has a ton of variety for photo backdrops.
  • Sunset Cliffs – epic cliffs and unforgettable sunsets, busier than the other beaches as far as photo sessions. Also, no sand opportunity at this location if you’re hoping for photos walking the shoreline you may want to choose a different beach.
  • La Jolla Cove – rocky outcroppings, and tide pool vibes.

Whether you want a casual barefoot-in-the-sand vibe or a more formal coastal romance, there’s a beach here for you.

Timing is Everything – The Magic of Golden Hour

For beach engagement sessions, we always recommend starting 60 minutes before sunset. The warm, golden light makes skin tones look gorgeous and creates a dreamy, glowing atmosphere. It also avoids that dreaded high midday sun that gives harsh shadows like raccoon eyes. On the coast, golden hour often ends with a cotton candy-colored sky — the perfect grand finale for your session. Which we always capture with off camera lighting to get the truest representation of the colors painting the sky. As you’ll see in this session, we can’t always plan for “perfect” skies. It’s always up to mother nature, however, don’t let the possibility of overcast skies scare you off from a beach session. Jenna and Kevin’s session prove cloudy skies can still create magic.

What to Wear for Your San Diego Beach Engagement Photos

Here are a few tips we share with our couples:

  • Flowy fabrics look beautiful in the ocean breeze.
  • Neutral tones or pastels pair perfectly with beach colors.
  • Barefoot or sandals – trust us, heels and sand don’t mix.
  • Be ready to get your feet sandy and your clothes a little salty. The best photos happen when you let go and enjoy it.

Making the Most of Your Engagement Session

We started up on the bluffs, capturing that dreamy wildflower field vibe. Then we wandered along the shore, laughed as the waves playfully chased us, and found little pockets of privacy among the rocks. Our goal during every engagement session is to create a space where couples can relax, be themselves, and forget the camera is even there. Jenna and Kevin truly embraced this. We always help with posing but we really recommend making it your own! Melt in, trust the process, pull yourself into the moment. We stand back often, letting you simply be, capturing those small, in-between moments that tell the real story of who you are.

The result? Natural smiles, genuine connection, and photos that feel like you.
